Workshop Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas and Local Development Strategies: New Prospects for Growth

Sardinia 2nd-3rd of April 2009

Organization : Geological Mining Park of Sardinia

Aims and Objectives of the Conference

The workshop is aimed at giving an overall vision of the issues and the opportunities relating to the management of sustainable tourism development (processes) in protected areas, at the same time stimulating the debate about the local growth prospects.

Looking at the experiences of the stakeholders involved in local development (processes) is a good way of linking and networking policy making territorial groups (in protected areas), in other words municipalities, the academic world, the enterprise world, business and local people in general.

The aim is to contribute to the spread of new methods and integrated approaches to the sustainable development of tourism in protected areas.

Participants we want to attract

The workshop is open to those operating in tourist areas such as owners, managers, executives of tourist facilities, mayors, regional and local councillors for tourism, park authorities, waste collection and disposal enterprises, specialized press and research institutes.

The workshop will be held at the old mining power plant in the village of Buggerru and at the mining compound of Montevecchio.

The dates are the 2nd of April (1st evening session in Buggerru) and 3rd of April (2nd morning session in Montevecchio).

More specifically the aim of the workshop is:

-  to inform and to reinforce a solid process of creation of consensus of all those operating in the area concerning the key element of the development of tourism linked to the conservation of the natural heritage and of biodiversity;

-  to support and familiarize those managing the services of the protected areas with the concept of the sustainable use of the resources of the area for tourism and encourage an exchange of experiences of different productive systems;

-  to demonstrate with examples and good practice the possibility of developing innovative and creative kinds of tourism that are respectful of the protected areas;

-  to contribute to disseminating among the stakeholders in the processes of local development integrated approaches and planning practices that are sensitive to the specific character of the area and to the optimal use of local resources;

-  to stimulate and activate, through an exchange of good practices and pilot projects, the involvement and participation of local people in projects on the basis of local 'know-how'.;

-  to promote local identity and the values typical of the area, such as the strategic resources for sustainable tourism development of the protected areas;

-  to publicise and disseminate as much as possible the reports of the workshop as well as the good practices.

Expected results

The workshop aims to provide broader knowledge of the potential and the competitive advantages that sustainable local tourism development can offer as added value to the protected areas. The workshop is also part of a wider planning framework of actions aimed at reinforcing processes of consensus creation that the Historical and Environmental Mining Park of Sardinia has already undertaken in conjunction with the local communities.

The workshop also constitutes an opportunity to orient and inform all those operating in various fields in areas suited to tourist development. Finally, the Workshop aims to identify common strategies of sustainable tourism development with the synergic participation of the local communities.
